A. G. Russell with Congressman John Boozman.

September 1, 2004

In March of this year we began supporting our troops fighting terrorism in the Middle East. I grew up in a military family, and I know the loneliness that each of our soldiers and their families suffer when overseas. A "care package" from home can go a long way toward boosting morale and to show them they are appreciated.

We began sending the packages to units in Iraq & Afghanistan. Each package contains a magazine, paperback book, an A. G. Russell™ K93B Featherlite™ One-Hand-Knife™, A. G. Russell™ field tweezers, adhesive bandages and a pocketsize copy of the U. S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence. We also throw in toiletries and other useful items when they are donated. We're always on the lookout for items useful to the troops that can be easily added to the packages. Right now we are especially looking for donations of good quality used paperback books & DVDs.

We are gratified for the recognition that the staff at Blade® magazine gave the program by awarding us their 2004 PUBLISHER'S AWARD® for work "above & beyond" either in or outside the cutlery industry. Although we don't seek credit, we greatly appreciate all the help we receive to continue the program for the troops and this award has drawn attention to the need.

As a result of the Blade® Show, we have received quite a bit of support from the knife industry. In addition, many magazine publishers donate copies monthly and many of the suppliers we work with have also donated goods. Industry support for the program continues to grow as more folks become aware.

On August 2nd, Congressman John Boozman visited our offices to formally recognize the project and as a result of the accompanying publicity, we have had good support from local customers, as well as local folks who are not customers. We were pleased that Mr. Boozman offered to carry three boxes of "care packages" directly to the troops on his recent trip to Iraq.

I have been buying all the appropriate paperbacks I can find from libraries, but I am sorry to say that the local supply seems to be depleted. Most local libraries have a store where they sell the paperback books that are donated to them. Explain that you want them for the troops and they will sell at a discount. I have been paying $.10 a book. Once the library has been depleted, perhaps you can organize your neighbors and friends as we did in WWII, collecting many things for the War Effort. Surely we can gather paperbacks and DVDs for those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We have mailed over 4,000 packages, please help us continue shipments of "care packages" to the troops by sending your paperbacks and DVDs today. (No hardback books or cash donations, please.)
